Scottish Democratic Alliance
Scotland's Status as a nation PDF Print E-mail

In recent days there has been much talk about whether Scotland and its people have the right to hold and run a referendum on the question of independence or otherwise.  Neither the Westminster or the Holyrood governments appear to be fully aware of the full legal position under international law, which is superior to UK law.

In reality the decision has been made and is clear under international law.

The Scots and the Scottish government have the right under the Charter of the United Nations to hold a referendum without interference from the Westminster parliament.

The following three documents explain the full legal story, and we recommend that you read the Self-determination pdf first.

.Scotland's greatest resource is its people. Since the devolution settlement we have a renewed sense of self-worth and pride of nationhood. We are Scots and proud of it.

Failte gu Partaidh Cho-Fhlaitheachd na h’Alba

The Scottish Democratic Alliance (SDA) currently operates as an internet based think-tank generating policies that will be required by a self governing Scotland, thereby allowing the Scottish government to get on with the business of governing. The SDA believes the interests of the Scots are best provided by Scottish-based political organisations, and it is registered with the Electoral Commission.                             The SDA stands for:

*  Supporting the fight for Home Rule and Full Fiscal Autonomy

*  A written Constitution outlining Scots' rights and the functions of government

* Trading with Europe, England, Wales and Northern Ireland as a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) side of the EEA, as do Switzerland and Norway

* Staying out of the European Union (EU) with its mass of costly regulations, high family food prices and ongoing record of damaging Scotland's economy. The influence that could be exerted by a member state of 5 millions within a union of 500 millions would put Scotland into a situation ten times worse than the one we are currently trying to escape from.

* Rebuilding Scotland's manufacturing, shipbuilding, fishing and farming industries within an interdependent global economy

* Promoting Scots based sustainable and affordable energy supplies, with a proposed fuel price at the pumps (based on current charges) of £0.95 pence per litre including Road Tax -- saving some £0.41 pence per litre at today's prices

* Slim government administration, with better provision for services such as health, education, social welfare and police provided by collaborative public, volunteer and private organisations at local level

* Changing to a Monetary System based on National Credit rather than on bank debt, together with a  new taxation system to fund government;  a more efficient system that will encourage economic growth, competition, innovation and inward investment

*  A Scots Central bank, Financial Services, Investment Bank and Stock Exchange; with our own currency, the Merk - divisible into 100 pence

* Protection of our people and territory by Security and Defence forces allied with NATO and serviced by companies sustaining thousands of jobs in Scotland

*  Engaging with the estimated 40 million people of Scots descent around the world to keep them informed of Scotland's progress and promote exports, tourism, and inward investment
